the ears are a hold over from various shape shifting forms like wolves and bats. as well as vague allusions of having "sharp fetchers"
sun aversion is just a mane fetcher of vampire myths

Developers were huge WoW fans and I guess the idea came from Night Elves and Blood Elves, same goes for glowy eyes.
