Gems do need to be used for something more, I've been grinding them down for dust then using them to summon golems for the gem colors I want but once you have the best roll for spell jewels they kind sit there or just get ignored when picking up loot. Hell I'd like a trash can just to toss away junk I don't need or want anymore cause of how excess the materials can be.
I like Papers and what not to be used for scrolls for buffs. Having gems used for something like that would be okay in my book. Giving a temporary buff to the school of magic you want would be pretty solid.
To even get the Gem Crafting table you got to next to level 50 gear.
They could have just had a single gem to do all the rerolls instead of multiple gems for no added purpose
