Coffin doesn't accelerate time?
Is it serious? I'm supposed to look at my screen during all day?
This is really bad design.

What the heck are you talking about
Light causes shadows. Shadows are safe to stand in. Play smart, don't burn.
This ain't Minecraft, with skipping time. Daytime is part of the game. Avoiding the Sun, as well.

The coffin is mostly useful if you're AFK - basically no random NPC attacks you until you get a proper base going. It also acts as a respawn point.

You don't actually have to wait for the day to pass- the Sun is pretty forgiving, just go underneath a tree every now and then. I usually either go out to collect resources or build around my base, using the Mist Brazier for cover. I only make one for myself, I just move it wherever I'm working at. Or I use the daytime nap to check out Discussions, like right now :)

Edit: This game is mainly set around Multiplayer - it would be silly for time to speed up from one or two people sleeping. If you're playing on a Private server, you can always change the settings to make Daytime really short!

Adding on to this, even the rocks cast shadow on one side during the day. There is also clouds in the sky that will cast a moving shadow on the ground.

I'm in my "castle", at the start of the game. I have small walls and shadows than do not cover nearly enough. I need to craft stuff and I can't because shadows aren't big enough during the day.
So now instead of doing anything productive, I have to wait for the stupid sun to go down.
This is stupid and cumbersome. (And I hear bows outside)

The initial palisade walls aren't super useful, but you'll soon unlock stone walls, and those are used to make an actual castle with a roof to keep the sun out.

For now, you also have access to a mist brazier. This burns bones to create a large cloud in the area to keep you safe during the daytime. It burns 1 bone per minute, and doesn't turn off at night, so make sure to turn the lights off before leaving your base to save on bone bills.
Skill issue

Working in your base before you can build fully enclosed rooms - get used to using shadows (don't cut down certain trees, leave them for shadows, etc) or build a Mist Brazier (you should already have its plan) to give yourself cover from the sun.

Being out and doing things during the day is 100% feasible. When the game gives you tools to deal with its mechanics - and you just come out here and complain, it's not going to get you any pity.

You can get by with just one mist brazier for quite a while, too. It's not like you need 5 or 6 of them. I tend to run around during the night harvesting and killing enemies and usually craft and upgrade my castle during the day.

bro, make a mist brazier

They literally tell you to build a mist brazier.. and that will allow you to work on your castle even in daylight.. lol.

You start with a mist brazer that gives you cover by burning bones and with all the bones you bonked along the way you should have plenty to last until your next batch

Sunlight is fine but I agree with OP about the coffin.
While I'm asleep in my coffin, I expected the clock to speed up.
Its not a big deal or anything but it's usually standard for this type of game mechanic.
I was surprised it wasn't at least a setting.
if only there was a tutorial to follow, that makes you build a special brazier at the same time as your first coffin... oh wait

This would only work properly in single-player even if they did add it, and the game is more balanced around Multiplayer by default. Also I venture to say they increased the duration of "Swedish Winter" Daylight Settings by 2 hours on 1.0 (which isn't that bad normally but when you play with 3600 second days...it is better balanced for the old setting of 3 hours of daylight rather than 5)
