The coffin is mostly useful if you're AFK - basically no random NPC attacks you until you get a proper base going. It also acts as a respawn point.
You don't actually have to wait for the day to pass- the Sun is pretty forgiving, just go underneath a tree every now and then. I usually either go out to collect resources or build around my base, using the Mist Brazier for cover. I only make one for myself, I just move it wherever I'm working at. Or I use the daytime nap to check out Discussions, like right now :)
Edit: This game is mainly set around Multiplayer - it would be silly for time to speed up from one or two people sleeping. If you're playing on a Private server, you can always change the settings to make Daytime really short!
Adding on to this, even the rocks cast shadow on one side during the day. There is also clouds in the sky that will cast a moving shadow on the ground.
So now instead of doing anything productive, I have to wait for the stupid sun to go down.
This is stupid and cumbersome. (And I hear bows outside)
For now, you also have access to a mist brazier. This burns bones to create a large cloud in the area to keep you safe during the daytime. It burns 1 bone per minute, and doesn't turn off at night, so make sure to turn the lights off before leaving your base to save on bone bills.
Being out and doing things during the day is 100% feasible. When the game gives you tools to deal with its mechanics - and you just come out here and complain, it's not going to get you any pity.
You can get by with just one mist brazier for quite a while, too. It's not like you need 5 or 6 of them. I tend to run around during the night harvesting and killing enemies and usually craft and upgrade my castle during the day.
While I'm asleep in my coffin, I expected the clock to speed up.
Its not a big deal or anything but it's usually standard for this type of game mechanic.
I was surprised it wasn't at least a setting.
