Dedicated server?
Can you set up your own dedicated server still? If so, how? In preparation for me and my friend playing this, I looked up how to do so, but the guide I was reading told me to search steam for "V rising dedicated server", which doesn't come up.

Apologies if this is an idiotic question.

Yes, you can still set one up. When choosing to create or rent a dedicated server in the game, clicking one of them will open up a webpage that explains the process.

Thanks.

When they talk about putting player names in the files to make them Admins, are they talking about your Steam display name?

If you get this to work I would love to know how you did it. I have followed that guide and many others like it. My server is running and set up as per the instructions but still will not respond even to a direct connection from inside the local network.

For the admin question: its the steamid64, a long number you can find on steamid.io if you put your profile url or search your username.

@ druzil, its a little hard to troubleshoot from outside since everyone's network can be different. first check if the machines can even ping each other, if they can, maybe try to use some port scanner tool to find out if it responds on the ports your server should be on?

i run my server on linux using TrueOsiris' docker-compose file and it's working well, 26 players on tonight (all randoms lol)

I have not tried a port scanner but I am 99% positive the server is running. It is a windows 10 machine that I use to run servers for other games. It pings. The server is pulling cpu/ram and appears to be generating auto saves. I have edited all the appropriate files, forwarded ports, set firewall rules. The name I have set appears in the console when I launch it. Tried changing to different ports. The host just will not respond even to a direct connect from inside the network. In my search for answers I have encountered a few ppl saying "it works for me on linux" and several others with the same issue on windows. Just cannot find a solution.

I had started another discussion trying to figure out the same thing on windows 11. The dedicated server - running. Watch the CMD update, PC resources move, and generated server data and auto save files populate. Can not access the server from game. I have triple checked that it is set to be listed on both Steam and EOS as well as allowed by my firewall.

I followed the provided github instructions for setting up the "ServerHostSettings.json" file that Steam links to. I did notice a lot more settings were discussed on github instructions than are actually coded within the "ServerHostSettings.json" as downloaded, which raises my design engineer alarms.

I have spent hours working in the code trying to find why the server is inaccessible. This is sold as a working game with dedicated server. Hopefully you find a solution, I'll let you know if I hear anything. I will be setting an IP address binding just to attempt direct connecting locally to see if anything is usable. If that doesn't work and I hear nothing from the powers at be, I may be refunding this game. I like the game, and the game play too. However, I have lost all trust with software developers. So many intentionally disallow features sold through end user obfuscation and subscription/rental paywalls. I seriously hope this isn't the case here, but I won't be surprised if we are "supposed" to rent a dedicated server from the developer, considering most people use Windows because they either have to or are not familiar with Linux.

So idk if the fix I found was actually a fix or a coincidence but this is what happened. When attempting to direct connect to the local IP I was checking the Lan box because that seemed logical. After many attempts over many days I accidentally forgot to check that box and it connected. Since that day, and even through server restarts, it ha worked 100% perfectly. Even shows up in the list and is joinable by anyone with the password. Fwiw I hope it helps someone get up and running.

I'm having the same problem (windows 10 and windows 7). I think I got connected once, then on restart it broke and couldn't get it to work on 2 separate machines. Can not connect from inside or outside network. My linux box only has 8gb RAM so I gave up and just run a listen server.

If my friends are still playing i'll lower the maxfps setting and leave the game running.

yeah the LAN option is for local area network only, if u check that box your private server will not work.
