CPU overheating issue, help?
Hello, Loving this game, but its really hard on my CPU for some reason. Brings it up to almost 90 degree Celcius!

Processor 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-12900KF
32 GB Ram DDR5
Nvidia 4070ti
run on Win 11

Any tips on lowering the CPU usage for this Game would be appreciated
Thanks!

Before following the instructions below understand that this is only meant as a temporary mitigation until the overheating issue can be solved by for example updating drivers adjusting the airflow or if there is indeed a CPU lock issue by the developer patching the game.

Windows + R
powercfg.cpl
Change plan settings
Change advanced power settings
Unfold Processor power management
Unfold System cooling policy
Adjust plugged in to active if it is on Passive

Unfold Maximum processor state
Adjust plugged in to between 75 and 85 %

Apply settings restart system

Start game and monitor temperature difference vs the default processor stat of 100%. If it is below normal threshold for your chip-set than your set for some time.

Understand if this is a laptop those are designed to run on higher temperatures.
High temperature unless beyond terminal capacity is not something to worry about. Constant temperature fluctuations however are deadly for your hardware.
That said the lower the temperature of course the better performance you should get so keeping it in balance is always the best idea.

Note that this will affect your entire system at all times until you change the setting back. There are programs and ways to do it on application or even core base but those require intimate knowledge of processor operations and messing with that can result in a system that simply will not run stable.

If you do want to follow those simply type in how to limit CPU per process base in your search engine and you should get a few results. I am not advising it how ever.

Your CPU overheating has nothing to do with this, or any other game. Also CPU usage is not an issue.

Well, its the only game that overheats my CPU. Even the Satisfactory or Cyberpunk games doesn't bring it so high.

Try V-Sync and frame limiters, just in case the game is running at a thousand frames per second.

I would also love to know which settings I can lower to reduce some CPU usage. I noticed I sometimes get low FPS on some places while my GPU is still at 70-80%.

Vsync. there is a good chance your fps are running amok.

GPU is meant to be high usage. It's designed for it. It's interesting though you quote 70-80% GPU usage but don't bother to mention your CPU usage.. and make sure you're quoting JUST what the game is using. Not the total among your PC.

The people recommending v-sync are incorrect. V-sync is a last line of defense. Set your frame limit to your monitor refresh rate. If you get screen tearing even with that, try going slightly under (like 1 or 2) and if you still get tearing then you use V-sync. The V-sync in the game seems to be bugged currently though and introduces slow down and stuttering if your FPS varies.

Saying another game does/doesn't do something to your PC means nothing really. Every game has different demands. Typically games like Satisfactory and Cyberpunk are far more GPU intensive. Meanwhile games like V-Rising are CPU intensive. There's many reasons for this that I won't bother getting into.

CPU overheating can be from many things. You could have an FPS count that is way too high (which isn't good for your PC because it generates extra heat and uses more power). You could also have a dirty PC that needs cleaned out. Your fans could not be working well because of all the dust, hair, etc that is inside. You could also have a defective CPU cooler. Just saying the game gets to 90C doesn't really mean much. How long does it take to reach that? If it's mere seconds of the game running then yeah you have a cooling issue that isn't the game's fault. If it takes a while then you likely need to clean out your PC and/or limit the FPS.

My problem is not the same as the OP. I'm just using the same topic to ask which graphic settings may be more CPU-bound, nothing else. If I get low FPS with 70-80% GPU I'm clearly CPU bottlenecked... My FX processor sucks. =)

You still haven't answered what your CPU usage is even at on the game. Without that we can't really tell if you're bottlenecked. Your system might just not have the power for the settings you have. A bottleneck isn't just you aren't reaching a goal FPS.. a bottleneck is when you have the GPU at like 90% usage and CPU is 30% and you're still getting low FPS.. then we can tell your GPU is working hard while the CPU is fine. If both are say 80% then there's no bottleneck.. they both suck.

As for CPU settings, there aren't any really because the CPU on games like this is keeping track of everything going on around you on the server you're on. The only ones I can see really affecting CPU are like the cloth physics settings.

Yeah it is heavy when it comes to heat. First thing I did was check my fps isn't running free and turn off or low anything to do with fog.
Blowfeld May 9, 2024 @ 10:27am
If any application overheats your cpu, you need cleaning and / or better cooling. Esp. for something like the 12900KF.

Do stresstest and maybe repaste

So far after hundreds of hours, all maxed at 1440p my results are consistent, the game always leans alot more into my gpu meanwhile my cpu is just chilling out most of the time.

I doubt it is caused by the game "demand" but perhaps something else hammering on the background? Time to respaste or dust has claim ownership of you cpu cooling?

But as stated already, pretty much near all settings are gpu related, only cloth sim will affect your cpu, but in my experience barely can any difference. Also cap to 60fps, its more than fine and spares your cpu from having to keep up with your gpu demand to keep high fps.

I wonder if he has water cooling on I9 12900KF or wind cooling - if WIND one then it isn't enough - and I will use argument TRUST ME BRO here. Anyway most ppls don't know how to use NVidia control panel to limit fps in any games without even using damn v-sync.

Most games nowadays have an FPS limiter in game that's better to use than the control panel. V Rising included. There's 3 options, no limits, limit, or V-Sync. Using Limit then setting the slider to your monitor refresh rate (or 60 if they're fine with that) is what everyone should do.

As for what you said about people not knowing how, it's kind of scary to me how many people are "gamers" and don't know even the basics about settings on games.. especially when they're *professional* gamers..
