Mostly I just tap Y to orient the camera behind me. Also, set your minimap to match the rotation of the world. Life got so much easier once I did these.
They already have it designed so that your character attacks in the direction you are pressing the left stick, unless you press the right stick in a direction. Which means you really only need to touch the right stick if you are using a skill. Personally I don't back peddle while melee attacking much. I run towards what I'm trying to hit. There could be an option so that when you press a skill button the left stick switches to aiming, otherwise it's for camera rotation.
I hate playing just about any game with a keyboard. Love the mouse part, hate the keyboard. I constantly hit the wrong keys or multiple keys at once. Much prefer a controller.
Anyway, I think it's impressive that they made the game work as well as it does with a controller. Now if they could just work out the controller bugs on Steam Deck...
Still options are always nice and would be welcomed.

Hopefully it works, I haven't tried it yet. I'll try it later or tomorrow when I play the game again.
Like in games where you need to press down on the d-pad to heal, I bind that ♥♥♥♥. Or roll in Dark Souls or Monster Hunter so I can roll while moving the camera
(If it's too jarring for how quick the movement can be: have the camera slowly rotate and not instantly rotate, but just have it rotate on it's own to follow the character with no need for input)
I've tried it and it works perfectly. I can finally play comfortably with a gamepad.
