It's a reoccurring mechanic in a lot of RPGs. Simply put, a precent of the damage dealt is returned to the attacker as health.

So if you have 5% life drain, and you hit an enemy for 100 points of damage, you get 5 HP back.

I'm familiar with that. What has me perplexed is actually a spell description. It doesn't seem to have a noticeable effect. Particularly Sanguine coil. it states the following:

Launch a projectile that deals 75% magic damage, drains 30% health, and inflicts leech. Heals allys for 120% and self for 30% of spell power. On testing with a gem that improves the drain effect, it doesn't seem to heal me any extra; nor, does it seem to do any additional damage.

It seems to be a new addition in 1.0, and I'm not certain what it's intent is. Perhaps it is just supposed to be a multiplier on the life steal and they did the math on it wrong? I also thought it may have had something to do with percent hp damage to an enemy. But testing seems indicative it having no effect.

the devs love to make the descriptions as questionable as possible. The drain may be scaling with your spell power. Leeching health i think scales on damage dealt.
Its very hard to make a popup description to click for clarification.
