Somewhat, yes. There are Tomes that Give you the Unlockable, but sometimes you'll have unlocked what that tome has so you scrap down the tome for paper/scrolls for Random Research.

Ah still random as well then to a degree, urgh

Wrong, you can now buy the tomes to unlock what you need directly thx to coins you loot from ennemies and merchants you meet at certain spot in the game.

Yeah some. Not all the recipes you can buy. The merchants have a limited stock of the recipes.
Glyph 24 MAY 2023 a las 6:48
They guaranteed the paper press at least (early too) and simplified the recipes a bit. Much easier to make paper/scrolls/schematics now.

The research system was made far easier and removed the hellish RNG.

Merchants sell recipe tomes. They typically sell the good stuff like flooring, full body armor, random weapons, and random potions. Buy out what they have, then go to your research bench.

The paper press got mega buffed. Now you can upgrade lower level scrolls to the higher level ones at pretty good efficiency. So be sure to bank them up. Extra scrolls are useless after unlocking everything.

Oh thank god, one of the main reasons I quit after launch was how absolutely cancerous it was especially in PvP servers, you could spend literal days and still not unlock the weapon or armour piece you were missing depending on if the mobs decided to screw you on RNG

You cant be completely hosed at least. You WILL get all the recipes from random pulls with paper/scrolls/schematics eventually. But it sure is nice when what you actually need drops.

I once played for almost 20 hours and STILL it wouldn't give me one piece of the armour set, which was really gimping even in PvE let alone PvP
Suzaku 24 MAY 2023 a las 8:56
Yeah, if you want armor and weapon upgrades, there are book traders now. So in the worst-case scenario, you can murder random NPCs, take their money, and head to your local bookstore to buy the plans you need. They refresh their stock every hour with new books.

Seeing a lot of incorrect info in here.

Let's clear that up...

1 - Discovery at each of the respective research tables is still 100% RNG. Only thing you're guaranteed through Discovery is to eventually get all the tech from each tier. You cannot choose what tech unlocks via Discovery.
2 - Books drop that can unlock specific tech in each tier. Books for tech you already have can drop and you can salvage books (even for tech you don't have yet) for their respective tier of Discovery resource (paper/scroll/schematic).
3 - Paper Press is now, thankfully, guaranteed to be obtained. The recipes for each tier of Discovery resource is now more reasonable, as well.

Tho, imo, paper->scroll recipe is crappy due to the coarse thread. never had any issues getting tech scrap for scroll->schematic. Coarse thread is from T1 areas and you're probably not frequenting them by the time you're doing schematics. But you are frequenting Gloomrot, where you'll find copious amounts of tech scarp. It makes the production chain from paper to schematics feel awkwardly balanced. Like a strange speed bump in the middle of a highway. That's how it made me feel, anyway. Not difficult, just awkward.

Set up a garden, grind any spare plants into pollen, combine it with plant fiber at a loom, and produce your own coarse thread. Or just raid the Dunley cotton/sunflower farms now and then for mass quantities to convert.
Glyph 24 MAY 2023 a las 9:02
You can make coarse thread yourself now, with plant fiber and pollen. Pollen itself can be made in the grinder from plants. You need a bunch of it of course, but you can farm it easier.
Pay Child Suport 24 MAY 2023 a las 9:04
grind useless flowers into pollen. add plant fibre and you have coarse thread.

That's why I said it's awkward. Paper is a simple recipe with simple, easy to get materials. Schematics require tech parts, which are from an area that you're frequently farming in due to late game. Scrolls require a material from an area that you've long since left behind for anything but repair materials. Cotton would make more sense due to needing it for a late game material, which means you're going to be stocking up on it already, and since it's closer to the gear level you'll be in when you start working on scroll research.

I guess I wasn't clear the first time despite the explanation I gave. I kept the explanation short because I assumed (obviously foolishly) that people would understand my point.
