Nicholaus the Fallen 1-shot at full HP
Please nerf this. I hate getting one shot by low-tier bosses even though I'm at full HP. There should never be an ability that can instantly kill you if it hits you. It feels cheap and only leaves you feeling like you've been cheated.

He has only 1 strong attack and it is quite telegraphed, and can even be used against him with a ward spell. Fight accordingly.

The secret (which it took me an embarrassingly long time to learn on my own) is to just GTFO when he starts glowing green. You don't even need a dash, just run away and you won't get smoked by his projectile spam.

Even if it's telegraphed, it shouldn't instantly kill you. He's not even a difficult boss. I've beaten him many times in the past, but every once in a while I get too close and he just instantly kills me, and I have to walk all the way across the map to get my stuff back.

Technically it's not a 1-shot. It's the release of like 15 projectiles, and you decided to walk up and eat all of them at the same time. So... y'know.... don't do that.

Or if you know it's coming, use a ward spell or counter spell, which negates them and could deal damage to the boss, turning his attack into your gain.

I say 1-shot because it's a single attack, even if it is a bunch of different projectiles.
Sometimes I don't know it's coming, either. It's easy to miss a single attack when the boss is surrounded by like 10 skeletons and there are already a ton of particles on the field from spells.

It gets worse on the bosses in the later end. It's dumb as ♥♥♥♥ that when you take damage, the max HP you can heal back up to is limited. I just soloed my way through the last boss, and Adam the firstborn was the only exception to my solo journey. I tried 40+ times and couldn't get him killed until I had others help me. You could be at 100% hp through 90% of the fight, but if you get grabbed wrong or move into one of their "specialty" moves, you're instantly roasted with no chance to come back because your max hp you can heal up to is so low. But to be honest, if it weren't for those mechanics, the game would be even faster to complete and all you'd have is a dead game 24/7. At least it keeps people playing longer after new content releases, the game pop imo will be dead again soon just like it was the first time.

If In am going to be playing solo is it worth switching to the PVE easy difficulty? I.e. is "normal" based on the assumption that you are teaming up with others?

No, bosses are dynamically balanced to counter dog piling. In fact several bosses are FAR easier to beat solo than with friends. Unless you are just objectively bad at the game or have a low tolerance to frustration, in those cases you may be better served playing in an easier mode.

I have a solution that doesn't involve nerfing the boss.
Solaire puts it better than I ever would.

Part of this fight is learning how lethal Nicholaus can be at close range and the remainder of his kit does not necessitate the use of your dash. Whatever Veil you have equipped can be saved, and probably should be saved, for disengaging from Nicholaus when he starts his windup. There are a dozen enemies across the game who have "shotgun" projectiles.... the answer is not to remove their point-blank lethality.

I do identify with getting suddenly clobbered over the head. Maybe it's the Dark Souls player in me but dying to a fight because you didn't understand how to avoid death is okay! I'm confident you'll find a flow to the fight that leaves you feeling rewarded by how you've played against him :)

I thought you were talking about his green bolt attack, which does do a boatload of damage as well, but it can't one shot you at any reasonable gear level unless your server has boss damage at least 2.5x.

I personally beat him by kiting with a (copper) crossbow and spells that pierce, like the one from the dude in the mines. I don't even pay attention to his adds and when he winds up his bolts, I hide behind a tree or such. ;o

Yeah, am a bit of a ♥♥♥♥♥. :D
