Pretty sure there is no unique reaper anymore, unless you're referring to ancestral weapons.
Learn to use your weaponskill's utilities instead of considering only their damage potential. Greatsword is probably the most utilitarian weapon, you can interrupt casts with Q and E provides a second of invincibility every 8 seconds. Some spells are designed to have this kind of utility, but others have it too and it's less obvious. Hope this helps.
If you have time to cast it and stay in place then you have time to drink a Blood Rose Brew, that will heal MUCH more.
[0]Therefore, a terrible advice.
With reaper its super easy to stop Maja from healing. Howling Reaper slows her little sacrifice and Tendon Swing kills / knocks away all the little crawlies. Phantom Aegis applies weaken on enemies, gives you more sustain, and builds stacks of phantasm quickly. Spectral bounces between her spawns to kill them quickly without having to target them individually. And with high phantasm stacks you'll be getting refreshes often on your abilities.
If he cannot do the Study boss in the first place then he cannot research anything in Act 2.
