The Official PVE servers just got reset a few days ago, so it'll be another ~85 days before they get reset again. Now's a great time to hop in.
When you create your own "server" it will only have you on it, but you can also tweak settings to tailor it to yourself. You can make fighting easier or harder, you can increase resources you gather with missions and such. There's a load of stuff you can do that is beneficial to a solo player. It's downside is that it's solo and you'll be lonely. Once you get to the top and effectively kill every boss, you'll have nothing to do.
PvE is very much the same, only it's persistent (the solo server stops when you logoff), will typically follow the default rules and will have other players. Other players on a pve server can't really do much against you other than block settlement spots, but there's enough for you to be fine anyway, so no biggy. They will have others online, so you can get help with hard content or generally just be social with something other than your mirror, which is difficult when you don't have a reflection!
All in all, you can't go hugely wrong with either.
I often play on a pvp server, but since the update I'm getting mobbed continuously and for no good reason. Just got chased a solid 20 minutes by some dude for no reason and it only ended because I just alt +f4 as I can't be arsed with it. It's making me think the pve server is where I'll end up, although part of me also doesn't want to have to keep remaking my castle, just because there's a server wipe.
Meh.... it's not an easy decision really... try both?
Pretty much this. I'd only recommend non official if you actually know the people hosting it. A lot of people can be douchebags as we all know and having that level of control brings out the worst in them.
That's fair, however I'm talking instances where other players around me are outright ignored and its just 100% gunning for me.
To be honest, the pvp is only worthwhile when you've done all the PvE content, I'm not gonna play enough to get into the seiges and whatnot, so it's my own issue for picking a pvp server.
That all said, I'd love a pvp arena or something you could use on a pve server to have duels and stuff.
Or even play singleplayer instead. If you are getting to know the ropes.
You can even increase the amount of castles you can build from 1 to as many as you desire.
Other players are the secret sauce of this game. The tension of wondering whether you're going to get ganked or not is great. Some of the most fun I've had is just running away from people lol. Or turning the tables and blasting someone 30 levels above you. Playing by yourself gets lonely and boring pretty quick.
That's a fair point, however if your not playing every day then your opening yourself up to getting your castle smashed, which will definitely happen at some point. To add to that, if you don't know anyone on the server, your likely going to run into clans who will just kill you over and over.
I always play PvP normally on all games and I did so here pre-patch, but I can't help but feel your entirely helpless unless you have a clan, which i understand, but it kinda forces you to play elsewhere.
To further expand, the server I'm currently on has had a group of Russian players camping the copper mine since the servers launched. They've effectively stopped everyone from leveling higher because they are just ganking everything that walks in there. It's pretty lame.
PvP can be fun, sure, but not when your a gear 20 and can't even tech out of the starting location.
Duo PVP servers are fine by me, even though I play solo. Limits the clans to two people. Plus you don't need to ever go to the copper mines to advance anyway; it's entirely skippable. I typically have full Merciless Copper before I ever decide to down Errol for the big chest recipe.
I think you're exaggerating more than a bit when you say "you're entirely helpless unless you have a clan," but everyone's individual experience may vary.
There's definitely a degree of exaggeration, sure. My first run pre-patch was generally problem free. I guess it's just exacerbated by the huge influx of people right now. There were definitely others who were less interested in killing everything and simply wanted to get on with what they were doing.
