Ice Block up not just to block incoming attacks but also when you just want an opportunity to heal yourself up a bit and you won't get punished immediately after it expires.
You are literally choosing to overextend a battle's duration by have too low dmg output/no sustain spells and then come to complain you can't kill anything why are you even surprised ?! you are literally taking a slapping contest vs smb twice yr size holding on to a brick while you are stubbornly holding on to a bag of marsh mellows
So far i think i saw about 15 different posts all complaining about boss x/y/z being impossible to kill and the one thing they all had in common was theyr reliance on necro skills that just can't cut it past mid game.
Many abilities can work well, but it's hard to go wrong with corrupted skull and ward of the damned. Though i wouldn't use a split shot jewel. Summons to take off the heat, some slight extra damage, and ward to block a heavy attack if you are out of movement options.
I'd also recommend veil of chaos or illusion for the added dash or teleport. Axes or pistols are also nice for extra movement and ranged attacks.
As for what grraf said, i think thats wrong generally. Necro skills are easy to use for bosses and the summons add a distraction. Not to mention when you have 3-5 summons up to hit the boss, it turns out to be decent damage.
The main difficulty of this fight is dealing with adds quickly and you've chosen arguably the worst spell in the game for the job.
The build I use is Veil of Blood, Chaos Volley, Bone Explosion, Volatile Arachnid. But this is not a build I would advocate to those struggling with the boss in the first place. You have to be very precise and calculate in advance where the nimble adds will be or you will just whiff. Something like Void + Ball Lightning or a true melee build like Blood Rage + Power Surge might be easier to get into if your best blood is Brute.
EDIT: Chaos shield is hands down the best skill vs adds that sidesteps any trick shots, since they will rapidly kill themselves striking it. Just remember to avoid a Jewel mod that stuns on melee attack, that is absolutely conterproductive.
People need to pay attention when they suggest impossible builds in these boss threads.
He probably meant ice nova i often get them confused myself
Do not try to block the spinning blades from Styx point blank though, for some bugged reason it does not work, put some distance first.
I also do not recommend blocking the Executioner phase with it, that is also very inconsistent.
Just to clarify on the necro spells: with many bosses is the only thing keeping me alive by distracting them. Voltatia for example, when she splits, can’t reach one of her without being disintegrated by the other. I actually defeated a lot of late game bosses with the necro spells. Some of them on the first try. Not saying they are perfect, just arguing that they are not necessarily the worst thing. I do get the point of Styx moving too much (teleporting) for the death knight to work.
I have a 100% Scholar prisoner and a 100% Rogue prisoner, but for the life of me, Brute is the only blood I can survive with, because of the healing. I would love to play a more spell based build, but alas, not enough healing.
Also, that bridge (even without the bombs) seems like a better place to fight him than the rest of the forest, that also helps. I did not know he went that far.
Explosives on their path. Not even kidding.
In fact, apply this to all wandering bosses (outside of protected areas).
If you intend to actually fight him, i'd say mix it up between your favorites, but keep heart strike for when he summons his ghouls (that are way too tanky and hit way too hard).
Blood Dash, Blood Rite and Blood Rage with Heart Strike for Elite.
One thing I Had to do was clear the fighting zone. Not an option when you're in the cursed forest filled with A bunch of ♥♥♥♥ that loves to ambush you.
I used a mix of Pistols, Reaper, and Greatsword. Greatsword to close the distance and for the adds, Pistols for DPS and Reaper for Adds and E ability when he stood still long enough. Blood Rage for faster Attacking and movement, Blood Rite to Soak up a hit and go Stealth and immaterial for I-Frames and blood dash for health regen. I used Heartstrike once thinking I could get rid of some outside adds but the Night stalkers ruined my first fight by being clumped together.
This was done during the night that transition to day with Attack and Magic Buffs, I got lazy and didn't want to wait to clear out the fight zone again so I took him close enough a bunch of rocks which helps when the Ghouls he summons get caught up on them.
Bring x bow and kite fest
Blood coils and wolves/the balls that spawn zombies
Crossbow is the way to go for PVE except for like 2 bosses
