cant find a spot to build castle

I'm playing single player and can't find a spot to build a castle heart, everywhere i try is blocked or too close to the road, where am I supposed to build?

Any open field on the map should work, as long as it's not an animal den or bandit camp or something like that. Mine/cut down anything in the way, then place your castle heart.

where are those, are they the areas highlighted in white?

Yes.

I tried going to one and was attacked by a corpse pile

Not every spot has high-level threats. Or you can sometimes even just run around it and not upset the enemy. Once you have some basic walls up, monsters can't break them so you can just leave them angry outside your walls.

i went a little further down the road to an area that was safe, thanks for the help!

the best position is a very big place literally in the middle of the map
from there you easily reach gloomrot and other notable (and later useful) locations

The multi layered plateaus on the map are build locations. Clear them of all debris and you can start building.
