Why do I need merciless copper weapons to mine iron and what's the deal with clive the firestarter?
Hey devs,
Why would you require players to have merciless copper weapons, just to mine iron? Especially when you all decided iron would be a required part of crafting recipes! Also, why would you make the clive the fire starter fight have such an annoying mechanic? If you're preferred type of combat is melee, you're basically screwed as the goober likes to hide in the radius of the explosives he sets making hitting him nearly impossible. Using ranged weapons isn't any less annoying either. I found myself having to spend more time focusing on dodging bombs, than attacking

Something needs to balance out, either remove the requirement for merciless copper weapons to mine iron or limit how often that annoying turd clive can drop those large area bombs. Because it's not a fight if players are spending more time dodging than dealing damage

I am not going to engage with this myself, you already know my opinion, but this post will lead nowhere.

Clive is easy, and entirely optional. And I'll tell you this: if you're already this adamant about not adapting to a fight, just uninstall now. You'll never survive an actually difficult opponent.

If you need merciless weapons, you can grab a handful of copper coins and visit one of the shady dealer camps and just buy a recipe.

So in other words, YOU don't understand Gear Progression and you can't find a strategy to defeat an easy as dirt boss....Just uninstall the game. You know what I don't get? Why make Two topics about the same thing?

I'll do myself a favor and just Ignore your topics.

You can find iron ore in massive quantities by looting enemy camps in Dunley if you'd prefer to do it that way. Break all the boxes and loot all the treasure chests and you should find enough. Then just make an iron weapon and you can mine iron.

How about no? I'll not uninstall just because you jumped to a conclusion like it was an olympic event. I never said Clive was hard, I said he's annoying and he is. I had to break off from attacking him, just to avoid the wide area bombs he drops after spamming the smaller ones. I eventually got him but that doesn't make the mechanic any less annoying

game is designed this way, each boss has a player check both gears and weaponr use. i truly wanna see you try and fight the engineers in melee oh boy... prepare to get cooked.

you have to adapt to each fight's boss's and pattern.

i'll agree however that some requirement are bullSith, like athaneium being unlock literally when you don't really need it anymore, it's just comfort at this point

You know you're the one person who didn't misinterpret my post and assume I'm complaining about the game being difficult. It's like the others forgot that nothing about the game is explained and that, the order in which they have you complete quests makes no sense. I mean, having players build servant coffins and convert servants, then have them have to make a throne, all before they can even work with iron. Just thinking about it hurts my brain

Then why bother replying at all?

Telling me the obvious doesn't help and besides, it doesn't explain why copper weapons aren't good enough to mine iron. Furthermore, had I not turned to youtube, I'd never have known the merciless copper weapons were needed to mine iron. Something like that should really be explained in game, that's my issue nothing is explained

Sounds like your trying to stick to melee to continuously deal damage, which isn't how this game plays. As you progress, you'll find this works less and less as bosses become more complicated and much more lethal. The combat is more about not getting hit and dealing as much damage as you can, when you can. It's not a slobberknocker, it's tactical and manic.

As for the merciless copper, it's needed because it's how the tech tree works. You could use the same argument with any progression step. The only thing I'll agree with is it's awkward to get them. That said, someone has already suggested trading for the recipe, which is guaranteed to get you what you need.

Clive is doable at level 10, with the new traders you can just spend 40 copper coins for a merciless weapon book instead.

Melee is my preferred type of combat in games like this and as far as dealing damage goes. I'm still not used to the mouse cursor determining what direction my character faces, so i miss a lot of attacks

Do me a favor reread my initial post and understand that I never said he's hard, just annoying. I'm tired of people jumping to conclusions because they didn't take the time to understand what they're replying to

So... there's this research desk, right? And this desk, pesky little bugger, controls progression and forces you to be active against bandits to find paper.

You do not need a mace to mine iron. Any merciless weapon will do, they'll just be slower. I don't think you'll actually lose any resources by using another weapon.

Clive is... yeah idk dude, I killed him tons of times with regular copper weapons and once even with reinforced bone crap and a blood rose ring because I only had leather that I picked up. He's annoying, not impossible, it's a patient fight that kills impatient people. The dopey little fop literally can't hit you unless you walk into a bomb. His retaliation attacks take forever and a day to go off, you'll be fine.

Also... you don't need to kill Clive, the Ferocious Bear gets you the same benefits as he does, a way to get to Quincy... But if you want to, get a crossbow and turn him into a porcupine (warning: aiming required) or just grab your copper sword/mace and spin/leap out of bombs, or into them, your choice, I've done both and still won.

If you have problem with Clive, you can come back to him later with better gear. He don't give anything important at this stage (if you don't use alchemy [but stuff can be bought from merchant]). Not all bosses are easy with every type of weapon, but this is case in all games.
Pattern weapon-tier-from-boss -> weapon-tier-from-research is repetitive in V Rising and encourage to exploration (or investment in paper press). This is good that now we can buy book with it. This game just doesn't predict skipping gear tiers. Iron is necessary only later in Farmlands, all Falbane Woods are copper and merciless copper oriented- to acquire iron ingot recipe you must kill Bandit King - last boss in area.
Need iron for Throne? Wrap up things in Woods and move on with tech tree. Later quest will request materials from next area too, that normal.
