I hit a similar wall with Behemoth and also with the Duke of Balaton, but in a lesser degree. Didn't want the game to beat me, but I also couldn't come up with a good strategy for a good while.
Give it some rest, some thought and try again later.
In the end, Behemoth was the most frustrating but also the most satisfying boss to beat. Why? Because I figured it out. And trust me... it got to a point where I thought this would be impossible to do for me.
Every boss has it's weaknesses... sometimes it's harder to see, but they all have them.
In regards to your patrol problems... Think about WHERE you want to fight him! Look around for advantages... Maybe you don't have to fight him on the road? Hint Hint Hint!!!
Follow him around... see what he's up to, Maybe there's a place where you can have a more isolated fight? (there is in his case)
Thanks for the ideas and insight!
Just incase you run into this again (I hit a few snags). Practice with different weapons!
I prefer:
Slashers for close combat + maneuvering
Crossbow to avoid close combat (like the bear and other fast melee bosses)
and axes for quick burst damage.
Some bosses are very difficult for certain weapon types!
