Gear Level effect

I'm wondering if gear level has "hidden" effect aside just being an indicator of your equipment quality.
It may be just an impression but I feel that when fighting bosses gear level has additional effect beyond attack and defence bonuses.
For example a blood type can add 1 to your gear level. Is it just for unlocking higher bosses?

Gear level in PvE affects the damage you do and the damage you receive. Simple as that and theres no limit cap in this effect, you can easy get some funny numbers if the lvl difference is massive.

Gear level does not unlock anything of value, you can kill mobs that are rated "skull" just takes more time/skill.

Gear level is a PvE mechanic which does change your damage dealt and recieved based on difference to the enemy. It matters nothing in PvP thou. So it's much easier to fight pvp against higher level opponent than a mob of comparable level.

You will deal twice normal damage to mobs half your level and vice versa
