Depends one the host. I don't believe there has been a hard cap applied by the developers. The default player limit is 40. I've seen some servers running with 250 player capacity. You can see the total current player count on the server list within game. This also shows you the total capacity for that server.

The game currently, is balanced for roughly 40 players on the server at once. When the map gets expanded in future updates etc, I can see server owners expanding that. I know I plan on expanding my player count limit when the map gets expanded upon.
