As for server wipes:
Thats up to the server host.
In survival PVP games like this some people like to only join freshly cleaned servers do they start off on the same foot. But others also like to have longer sessions so they don't feel like all their progress is lost every week.
On my Rust servers I often ran monthly or quarterly wipe server on Rust as a lot of the people in my community work 40+ hours a week and don't have hours everyday to play games. The few hours they could play wouldn't be enough in just 1 week to build a decent sized base etc. So longer term server worked better for them.
But the opposite end of the spectrum, where you have people who don't work or have daily obligations, they can spend 40 hours a week on a game. And in 40 hours they'll likely hit end game and want to restart. It really comes down to your community.
Restarting a server is generally good practise as it can clear out any server performance issues. The developers rolled out a notice not long ago onto all server about a performance and memory leak issue and to restart your client (the game for the players) on a regular basis if you start to see slow downs. It's not uncommon to see similar issues on servers especially during early access whilst the game and server systems are being optimised.
Just to emphasis. Restart simply means turn off and on the server. I don't mean wipe the server logs or settings etc.
I started playing on the 18th, so 10 days ago.
I'm only now starting to get into dark silver tier, and have my castles developed enough that I can start focusing more on decorating, and optimize aesthetics with function.
Weekly wipes would be a game killer for me.
Assuming wipes were monthly, in practice you'll never be joining a server with a full month of play left in that cycle.
People will be waiting for the right time to jump in, and ultimately be discouraged from playing.
There's also the amount of time an average person can dedicate to the game.
It took me 10 days at 5 hours per day of playtime to get into dark silver tier gear with more or less complete, but not decorated, castles.
So in a realistic case, assuming monthly wipes, a person joins a server with 3 weeks remaining in that cycle, and they would probably reach end game just in time to see all of their time and effort be erased.
Castle decay already does its job. Just running around, I tend to find 1-3 abandoned castles to sack daily.
I think it should be left alone.
As previously mentioned, restart the server for performance reasons, but don't have scheduled wipes.
A server SHOULD be restarted daily.. it literally take 10-15 minutes and can help clear up things like lag, issues with bosses or maybe things getting stuck, improve performance etc..
WHEN you do that? up to you but yea probably like 5/6 am.
A wipe is losing all progress. that is NOT what OP is talking about.
Also when I do a wipe I'm gonna make the old save available for people to download from Google Drive or something so they don't lose their work.
I restart my server at 6am UK time. With G-Portal they also have an option for a message to be posted in chat a few minutes before a restart to warn people. I feel any time you like, with a warning message say 5 or 10 mins before, is fair
