Hard stuck at level 28, please help! :(

So I have to construct a castle throne to command my servant but it requires iron. I tried to go to the area where iron is and the people are skulls to me. I have all copper and have been trying to get paper to unlock armor or weapons to increase my level but that's taking ages. Am I missing something? I see people on videos at this point I am at and they're level is mid 30's. Did I skip something?

I posted a screenshot to show what structures and stuff I've crafted so far.

skulls at iron site, you did upgrade your armor and weapons right? your not just running around with bone stuff?

Explore more, kill the bosses at your current level, upgrade gear. Once you are directed to the area with iron you will be the right level. Or you could try sneaking around the outskirts of the mine and hope for a random iron node (which you can't mine unless you have the merciless copper mace).

You need to get the recipres for Merciless Night Stalker armour and Merciless weapons.

Kill the boss in the armoury for best chance to get the Merciless Night Stalker armour recipes. Then kill the boss in the supher quarry for best chance to get the Merciless weapons recipes.

Yeah, my weapons are copper and my armor is all Nightstalker, except my chest is Merciless.

I have a few of the Merciless recipes but not all of them. I just have to farm the armory and sulfur quarry to get more? Seems like a gap in the game experience. There's no way to learn this in-game.

You need merciless copper weapons to mine the iron also. Regular copper wont work. So make sure you have atleast one merciless copper weapon befor you head out and try mining

Ya I fair part of this game is rng. I spent 2 days farming scrolls to unlock merciless iron armor and I got nothing but decorations and a few weapons. You can build a paper press which will allow you to make scrolls for research but unlocking the press is rng aswell and after 35 hours I still have not gotten it

The merciless (copper)armor recipies can be dropped off the bandit armorer and the weapon recipies can drop off the bandit king I believe? Can also collect paper to research them. It can be a bit rough to farm up if you're doing solo but it's doable. Any merciless weapon can farm up iron nodes though so that can help when you unlock iron and are trying to get it.

You can get paper and research as well, but you need at least one merciless copper weapon to mine iron, yes.

Yea, there is some RNG to getting through/over some of the gear tiers. But, considering all the various mats that need gathering it's feasible to do laps around places with lots of breakables and chest spawns while they respawn/refill at locations where Paper/Scrolls/Schematics drop. I was able to learn tonnes of recipes with limited difficulty.

A buddy and I have camped Grayson the Armorer and killed him probably 50 times.. Not a single Merciless Copper Armor book has dropped. We can drown an army with the sheer number of repeats of Warlock leggings, etc. But nothing Merciless.

Was there a change to the game that no one is talking about? Did the recipe books get moved to somewhere else?

Not only can you research with paper but you can craft paper, which is the best way to get out of a research lock like this.

take your coins to the merchant camps on the map, often you can buy the recipes you need at whatever level you are

You have lots of saw dust and I am sure you've got plenty of plant material. Your paper press converts it to paper, and 50 sheets of paper teaches you one random item. With all the saw dust I am sure you have, you can learn what ever is left to learn on your research stand.
