Can't start a Solo game [Error: Connection timed out]

I bought this game to play with a friend. It's worked fine with some minor hiccups.

This morning I figured I wanted to have my own save as well, just to play around in the game when my friend's not around.

I go into Play>Private Game and start.
Loading screen comes up. Connecting (1/5)... Connecting (5/5)...
Error: Connection timed out.

(note: This also happens if I try joining the multiplayer game we add by using Continue rather than a direct Steam invite.)

Is there an easy solution? Is there a port in my firewall that should be opened or something?

Steam generally runs as an administrator by default, not sure if it runs the games as administrators too. You could open the game's file location and run the .exe as administrator, that should sort it if the problem is your firewall or antivirus.

Alternatively, you could go into offline mode on steam, disable your internet connection too just to be sure, and then start up your solo game. Mind though you'll have to do this each time you want to have a properly solo experience. The game starts up a server for you even if you launch it on solo with internet connection. If you're in offline mode, and your PC can't connect to the internet, that should fix any connection problems.

Tried going into the directory and starting the .exe as administrator. All that did was give me a [Steamworks intialisation failed] error.

It feels kind of silly to have to jump through so many hoops just to play a game on my own.

It must be a problem with your system then, do you use Linux by any chance? I know recent patches have given Linux users an easier time, but if you use one that might be the cause. Otherwise I'd suspect corrupted files on your hard drive. Do any of your other games have any similar problems?

So eventually I tried turning off my VPN and that seems to have solved my problem for now.

same for me. even direct connect to our own rented private server doesnt work since friday morning ( and yes it is paid for ). only one of us was successful with using direct connect to log on there

works for us now. we had to reconnect with an updated port of the server. check your server ip if the port was updated and try again

The game works for me, but not the server i was playing on. The server i was playing on has an "Unknown status" while other servers work just fine.

That server also doesnt show on the list, is the server offline or something? Its not a private server.
