If you're on horseback, charmed targets will literally run at horse speed to catch up with you, and it's extremely hard for them to get killed when they're going that fast.
Try luring a mob into your base and then wall them in or shut the doors on them, once they lose you, they'll vanish and warp back to where they spawned on the coordinates.
