Dedicated Server Bogus
So in order to run the game on my server, I need to buy the game for my server. So instead of getting the game to play and being able to serve it, I must spend $40 instead of $20. Valheim is the same way and it's such a rip off. I won't support any studio that builds games in such a way that players get shafted like this.

so you want a server that is not on your PC to get a FREE copy of the game ?

Took about 45 seconds to find this:

HOSTING A V RISING DEDICATED SERVER
Anyone can host a dedicated server in V Rising, either by renting one via a third-party, or downloading the V Rising server client and running it on either their home PC or a dedicated server machine. You can grab the V Rising Dedicated Server tool directly from Steam, or follow the instructions when you click on ‘Host Dedicated Server’ in-game, which will take you to a GitHub page.

Pretty sure you can run the dedicated server software without buying a second copy of the game. I did so with a few other games (The Forest, Conan Exiles, 7 Days to Die) and I don't see why it wouldn't work with these two.

Here is one of several guides I was able to locate:

https://steamah.com/v-rising-how-to-create-a-dedicated-server/

p.s. Valheim also has a dedicated server option and I'd be willing to bet you can run that without buying a second copy as well.

You can host your own server on your pc for free. Too many people will bog down your PC and the server though. That is why servers are usually hosted on a dedicated server to handle that load while playing it at the same time. Think of any online game you have ever enjoyed. Those games have dedicated servers that you played on. They do have Official servers that are provided for you to play on for free, you can play single player for free, you can play with friends on a shared private game for free.

Hope this clears up the confusion you have about how servers work. Any private dedicated server will absolutely cost you money, but it is not required at all to play.

Yet you failed to read it. You cannot download the vrising dedicated server tool unless you own the game. You can't run the server and run the game because steam locks you out of using more than one app via steam at a time. Normally you log in anonymously and download server files via steam cmd. You can't do that with valheim or vrising. You must use your steam user:pass to prove you OWN the game in order to get server files.

I didn't need any clarity. I'm well versed in how servers work. You may want to brush up a bit and actually read my original post. If i wanted to play on official or host it myself, I wouldn't need to buy a second copy for a dedicated server. Self hosted and dedicated and not the same thing. Obviously, based on my post, I do not care to host it locally and burn my resources and degrade my gaming experience as friends join. So, I opted for a dedicated server only to find i have to buy the game again to host it on my server. My computer and my server are not the same. I hope this clarifies any incorrect assumptions you made earlier.

I think I'm safe in assuming you know nothing about how steam or servers work. So I'll just say no, you are incorrect in your comment. You also didn't understand my post at all if you think this is about a free game. I can't play the server. I can only play via the client which I buy. The server is a separate instance of the game you can only access via the paid version.

You can. Login to steam on the computer you want to be server, download server and run it. You don't even need to be logged in to run it. Has a .bat file you run. I do it with all my games that have server. I even logged into steam on both computers at once, just cant play on both at once.

I can't speak to V RIsing because I don't own it, but you absolutely can use steamcmd to host a Valheim server with an anonymous login. I have been doing so for a very long time.

I'm running my client on one PC and my Dedicated Server of V Rising on a 2nd PC without issue. No 2nd copy required. Used steamcmd to install the server files and off it went. Did same with Valheim.
Sparkletets May 21, 2022 @ 7:35pm
Chill out and save your money - look up "steamcmd". log in and Install the game server anonymously. Launch. Prosper.
Arc May 21, 2022 @ 10:45pm
I'm pretty sure my SteamCMD script uses Anonymous login so.. nice rant i guess ?

I do like how you said I should read the entire post while making comments that make it very clear that you didn't read all of my reply which renders your reply ignorant and pointless. Also, like just about every single survival/builder game, you also get a Dedicated Server in your library under Tools (not games) to allow you to create your own dedicated server instead of hosting one. In your Library search V Rising and you'll see:

<Games>
V Rising (installed)

<Soundtracks>
V Rising Soundtrack (not installed)

<Tools>
V Rising Dedicated Server (not installed)

Erm, I run my own server for my friends and I to play on. I own one copy of the game.

I don't think you're as 'well versed' as you think you are OP

It took my about 2 minutes to host this game for my friends and familly, on my own (dedicated) server. SteamCMD. (No purchase).

Open SteamCMD on your server
type; login anonymous
type; App_update 1829350
Close SteamCMD

Open folder: steamapps -> common -> Vrising -> Vrising server -> VRisingServer_Data -> Streamingassests

Modify (after you make a backup)
ServerGameSetting.json
ServerHostSettings.json

In ServerHostSettings.json add name, password, and port. Open your ports in your firewall/router.

Server beem running without issues for 18 hours.
