My dropped loot despawned??!?!

OK, left the computer thinking i was in a safe spot from the sun, had to do something suddenly. Took longer than expected. Came back, i was dead... and the normal like "dropped loot" icon is NOT on the map, and the stuff wasn't there either. I was carrying around a LOT of stuff, thinking I could just come back and loot it later if I died. On Singleplayer btw, so i wasn't ganked and robbed.

I was not aware of that being a thing and the game certainly never warned me. So I just lost all my mats to some proper bs :) If you have stuff permanently despawn, warn your players. That is not a trial and error thing, that should be reserved to how to fight enemies and bosses.

When you exit Single Player games the timer should stop running, so your stuff should have been safe, I'd have thought. I definitely wouldn't leave stuff lying around in Multiplayer, of course, but Single Player should have been safe enough. I'm mystified too.

Loot despawn based on ruleset applied. Check what you have set up on the server details. You can edit them if you are self-hosting a server onto the server settings file.
