How to invite friends to private server?

It really could not be less clear how to invite you friends to your private server. It literally says "invite your kin" on the private server option when playing but we cannot figure out how to join up

Invite via your Steam friends list once you, the host, are in the game in either character creation or later.

Open steam friend list. Right click and invite "friend" to game while you are IN your game.|
If that fails then you likely have a network issue between you. Also if you are in offline or invisible mode many modern game devs are to lazy to properly code the network interface between their game and steams plugin system. This results in steam NOT allowing ANY multiplayer in most games unless you are in "online" mode

What i do is:

1) Start the server
2) Alt Tab to steam overlay
3) Open friend list
4) Right Click on the friend ans choose "invite to play"

The option to invite to game is missing COMPLETELY from my friend's friend list.

I'm able to invite them fine, but the option doesn't even display when they host their game. All the settings are the same for the game as mine as well, brand new server also.

Only options she is given under the manage section are:
Watch Game
Game Info
Community Hub
Invite to Watch

I get under manage:
Invite to watch
Invite to Play

Any clarification on why this is happen is appreciated.

I'm having a similar issue. I'm in the game. I invited my friend, she accepted and the game launched but said "No response from host" and timed out. Any ideas appreciated.

For posterity, when I had this problem I had to activate steam rich presence in my game options.
