You need to unlock the the recipe, can't just do it right out. Either a main quest I haven't gotten to yet or a boss I can't see yet.
Now it is time to start the crappy grind to find enough to finish this part of the tutorial. I was having much fun up until this moment.
Don't do that. Just put the main quest on the backburner and continue progressing through the bosses. You will find the hearts you need along the way. The reason I say this is you are on the part of the quest where you unlock and use thralls, but you can't actually finish this part of the quest and use your thralls for anything until you kill a level 39 boss, so if you've been working mostly toward that goal you are about to hit a very steep wall, where the game expects you to start going out and doing your own thing for a while.
It's a boss, he's in the mid 40 range if I remember right
At level 46 you can kill a Vblood that lets you convert normal blood essence (which you will have a mountain of by then) to greater ones. This is around the time you get the iron ingots and glass you need for the 3rd tier castle anyway, so i wouldn't worry too much about it aside from the ones you need for the main quest, until then.
Fun!
In terms of progression, you're not meant to actually get your throne until level 44-46ish.
While you CAN get iron ingots around level 35ish, you don't get the ability to mass-produce greater blood essence until 46, and you get glass, which you need for tier 3 castle heart at 44. I ran into a similar problem myself around your level, but basically just keep progressing, and you'll get what you need.
