why does global chat not work?
i see others using it but i can only do local chat

Hit enter and then type /global

You have to press tab after opening a chat window

I used "/g message" in the chat and it switched to global chat and stayed there

With the chat window open, the tab key cycles thru Global, Local, and Clan chats.

Chat options are the following:
TAB after pressing "Enter" to cycle between the different chat types.
/L to use local or /local
/G to use global or /global
/C to use clan or /clan

Also a tip about a bug, don't be in the midst of using the chat menu while going to sleep in a coffin, you will be softlocked until you manually end the game process and log in again.
