Mixed Bag of a Demo
I found the overall vibe to be fun, very monster prom esq which I think is by design, however right now that enjoyment of the characters and writing is being held back by some issues with gameplay. I consistently had issues with controlling via mouse in the menus, sometimes it would work, other times nothing would happen.

The 2nd issue is the combat, adding a small deck building component isn't a bad idea of its self, allowing it to break up the straight dialogue game play except it felt really boring. It could have just been the deck and items I got, but basically I just used every card I had, with no regard to order and just hoped the items and party members I picked up by chance were enough to carry me. And that's all it felt like I could do, it never felt like I had much of a choice of the items I had. yea there is reroll tokens but thats just as random, same with the companions. I just sorta had to do the events and hoped whatever popped out was good enough for combat.

Would I pick this game up on release? If it allows for steam remote play, I probably would but that's due to already playing lots of monster prom and wanting to support more stuff like that. However the demo doesn't give me confidence that I could recommend the game on a general basis.

Hey Jay!

Do you remember where you were having trouble with mouse controls? The demo's on an older build (I think from July) but I want to make sure that there aren't any problems in the release version.

As far as deckbuilding / combat goes- you might get more out of the "War" difficulty on the full release. A lot of players care most for the characters and writing, so the game's tuned to make that an easier transition for players who came in expecting something more like The Yawhg or Monster Prom.

You never end up with control of your build down to the exact items- but you'll have more input than you expect. Each location has different event and reward pools, so you can guide what kind of character you're making when you're used to it. You get exposed to more stuff in multiplayer games, but the demo is single player only so it takes a little longer for it to click.

If you do end up picking it up- let me know what you think after a couple games with friends. It might still not end up being for you- but hopefully you'll feel like you have more autonomy.
