Basic knowledge: Briar and Lute were made into a Chimera, a creature consisting of one body with two souls. The Order of the Ashen Blade is the military safety enforcement of the land this game takes place in and is the Order that the sisters belong to as an Ashen Knight.
They're considered the runts of the litter. Layton the Observer says Briar is too stubborn, hot-headed and "i want to do it my own way" in attitude to be a proper soldier on the same level as most other Ashen Knights. And it's unusual for most Knights to always allow their Shade out.
Nevertheless, Briar and Lute were chosen to investigate a big tear over one of the three capital cities. The intro narration at the stained glass window already went in detail about it.
This is the basis, the rest will be told as you proceed.
Layton the Observer will have two optional conversation options in each level. Those are not super crucial to know, but it tells more of the world beyond what we get to see, and shows the development between Briar & Lute and Layton better. They react to the stuff going on in the moment, parts of the past and what environments they may be in.
