Hotel Architect

Hotel Architect

(Considerate) Thoughts after Pre-Early-Access Demo
While It's unreasonable for me to expect Two Point production value from this independent, well-intentioned Two Point clone, the ways it tries to stand apart would have been uncompelling to me at the drawing board stage:

- Inherently-sleepy hotel setting. I mean not much happens most of the time in them, unless it's a towering casino or a 5-star beach resort, neither being representative of the vast majority of hotels.

- Misplaced premise of hotel guests continually loitering in a hotel lobby/hallway expecting stimulation there and complaining about being bored...instead of going outside, or at least waiting in their paid private room with TV & Wi-Fi.

- Needlessly micro-managed construction mechanics (unrewarding busy-work). If the focus of the game is not construction, we shouldn't have to get in the weeds of hiring a contractor or prepositioning material for the job. We're already playing an architect that's also a hotel-manager.

- Multiple floors, which sounds like a wow-factor until you realise only one can practically be visible at once, making the levels feel abstracted from each other anyway.

- Floating-avatar models for the NPCs. Saves having to animate limbs, but makes them uninteresting subjects of your simulation. They look like drones in costumes, not people. That's not a bash at the artists, I simply feel the design choice results a lack of personality, immersion and connection with the inhabitants of the game world.

- A family-safe theme (besides some commendable toilet humor, notably the Japanese-style pixelation). Instead of differentiating further from Two Point with a more bold/adult/risque/black-comedy sensibility. E.g. have fun with the non-PG activities that guests tend to get up to in hotels besides sleeping.
Which brings me to the teaser of casino zones, which is the most interesting aspect so far, yet featuring gambling seems at odds with the otherwise kid-friendly theme. Why not go all in on that angle and make Casino Architect?
