Firearms vs melee skill gains

I'm farming mutants by a hundred each game day and this has resulted in serious gains for my various firearms skills. I'm trying to raise my melee skill as well but so far the gains are minuscule. Do we get skill increase based on number of attacks/number of successful attacks/number of melee kills? I need to know whether to farm squishier enemies that usually die to a 1-2 hit combo or should I concentrate on armoured scythes/pyros that take a few hits before going down.

I'm trying to max out all my skills getting ready for NG+

melee skills are increased per hit. so if you always one hit kill them you will barely increase your skill

I have killed every ghoul i've seen over 5 game days with the crowbar including ones at the mill and all 15+ or so at the church area. I have also killed 3 or 4 people with the crowbar. Each kill takes 2-4 hits or so. Its rare to kill a ghoul with only 2 hits though. 0 skill gain in melee. I also been running around a bit on and off. I already have 20 fitness skill just from that. Seems kinda imbalanced...

I just tested in the game by killing 14 small ghouls, and my melee skill increased by 0.468 points. This is the same rate as all other weapons.
