To me, Lost Alpha is amazing, but I have literally thousands of hours in all the STALKER games, I have played every mod available for CoP, and played through the original (SoC) when is was so buggy it crashed like every 30 minutes.
There are some changes as some locations like the garbage and the bar have totally changed, and it's not perfect in it's story, but it captures the zone and the whole feeling of it perfectly, and it's deadly even on STALKER difficultly.
I actually like the overgrown look of most of the areas, it works really well once you get used to it, and with some of the mods/options that are easily installed through the manager, it enhances the journey, and there are all kinds of day to day things you have to do just to stay alive so you are in the game all the way to the end.
On my last play through I got the good ending, and am now able to play with ALL of my gear (including a fully upgraded "Special" Exo suit that I bought from a "special" black market dealer in Pripyat) and there are missions right out of the gate for a little "after game" play.
I would say if you are a fan of STALKER to give it a chance, try to get into it as a whole new experience, you can actually make it through the whole game, and beat it, without ever stepping foot into many of the more annoying areas, OR you can spend literally a hundred hours doing all the quests and little side missions. OR you can just learn how to farm artifacts and trade with "certain" traders to get extremely rich.
It's totally free, and there is a guy from Dezowave in the threads over at the MoD DB that is still willing to help a brother out to get it running and tweaked to get the best experience.
In my Honest opinion, EVERY STALKER fan should play LA at least once.
(Some Tips: you have to both KILL "some" of the military AND help/befriend them to make it FULLY through the game, AND you can HELP "Duty" in their struggle in the Bars areas, BUT, never fully join (because that will set off a bad mojo with a lot of helpful folks later on), and DO NOT piss off the mutated STALKERS, keep them neutral, it's best that way. SO it is a game of delicate balance with the factions, but not totally annoying...unless you do something really stupid.)
I wonder what did LA do to implement the "day to day things" to stay alive? I was hesitant with implementing any "chores" that just keep you busy such as an ever-decrementing hunger and thirst, or any complex health system that makes it a pain to manage. But that's mainly for the sake of letting you focus on the story and main quest. If I was to make a survival mode, I actually don't mind implementing a lot of chores lol
Hunger and thirst also work in a tandem, so when you eat, your thirst factor goes up so you must also drink and so on. AND "some" meds and "artifacts" make your hunger-factor go faster, So you are constantly balancing the weight of your inventory to keep just enough supplies you might need for a long journey or a tough fight...yada yada.
And blowouts and Geo-Storms happen often and out of nowhere, so you constantly need to be aware of where you are at and how long it will take you to get from point A to point B and/or if there is a possible safe place near by.
Also because of the fantastic A-Life in the STALKER games, some areas that you will travel back and forth through many times over must constantly be traveled with great awareness and stealth, OR the extra ammo and health packs you need just to survive them.
Not to mention, maintenance of your weapons and armor, and even the BEST armor must be maintained, and the repair kits...suck. You have to have SOME type of the same hardware to use for parts for each repair from a kit, AND the expensive kits (3 repairs each) themselves to just get a mild repair, so we are talking about not only the extra weight you must carry but you must decide if using a repair kit is even the best way to fix your stuff at that time.
Usually repair kits are a last resort when you are pinned down in the middle of nowhere, running low on specific ammo, and NEED that weapon or your suit fixed immediately.
You really should consider playing it and giving it a lot of attention, there are TONS of little nuances that are nothing short of flat out brilliant.
AND if you do play LA, do NOT use that modification that expands the A-Life, you will sometimes be stormed (possibly) by 50 very aggressive mutants at a time and they will KILL some of the quests as they just go right up into places you need to go and kill the people there that you NEED to talk to, and make advancing through some parts of the game impossible. (I think the mod warns you about this, but I'm telling you, once you do it you cannot turn it off)
I can go through my mods and tell you what I used if you want, mostly weapons and weather, and some cool suits for some factions, yada yada.
