The Alters

The Alters

I don't understand how to use the scanner for organics (blue smoke)?! [SOLVED]
Anyone else having difficulty with this?
Granted, I've never played a single game of survival genre before, not even a tiny bit, so it's completely new to me.
The Alters is the first one that seems interesting, personally.
The tutorial is not enough and the visual representation on the bottom right doesn't make it any clearer.
Can someone please help me understand this device?

Placing 4-5 will create a 'scanned area' but you need a large area of coverage for it to unlock the best 'spot' to place your extractor. You can collect all placed pylon/poles by holding a button (right click I think) but it will keep your already scanned area, then you just gotta scan more. So keep placing the pylon/poles to create a larger and larger area. After youve scanned enough it will change to the mode where you place the extractor.

TLDR:
- Place 4-5 scanner poles
- Collect all poles
- Place 4-5 more poles to expand the scanned area
- After youve scanned enough, place extractor

The scanning is god awful. I'll come back when they fix it.

I think I can at least find comfort that I'm not only one to quit the demo over this.
I like the atmosphere and I'd like to see more of the game if some tutorials and mechanics are improved because right now it's just too confusing to be enjoyable.

Thank you so much. I'll try again with these instructions in mind.
And honestly congrats for making sense of it!

Once you've placed all your poles, look through the ground for a big red patch, indicating a deposit, once you've scanned a red patch enough it'll tell you how to build a mining outpost.

Not all that hard, took me a few tries. As several others mentioned, scan with 4 poles as large as you can get into a square. Do it about 4-7 more times, picking up the poles each time and you will get it.

it's not really well explained in tutorial that you can pickup poles (so why there is a limit to them? nvm)

lore-wise it makes sense that he can only carry so many, so you gotta place and then reuse them.

I have one scanner in the storage,... but I don't know how to even select it or take it into my inventory. I stand at the wall, but have no climbing axe, because I need fluid...

Scanning takes a bit of work. You must ping and then pick up your scan pods and move them closer to where the strongest signal is, keep repeating until you find the source.

The scanning needs some reworking it's honestly a poorly designed system. I didn't have any issues with it during the demo but the system seemed really half-assed.

I thought it was awesome. lol. different strokes for different folks i suppose.

Yeah wow they really dropped the ball on this. It is not intuitive at all.
Füchsin Jun 13, 2024 @ 10:27am
Agreed, I did not enjoy the scanning mechanic, thank you for the help. And nice ID, Berghain 💃
