Learning sonar
I'm giving this game a good, solid try. I'm focusing now on using the sonar station of a Seawolf. One thing at a time!

What's a typical range for detecting an average sub? I set up a simple scenario without any shooting, and I can't really detect an Akula I at much more than 7 or 8 miles. I'm at 4 miles from him now, I think, and the DEMON doesn't have any reading. He's got trackers assigned, both on narrow band and wide band sonar, but "tracker review" on the DEMON screen doesn't do anything.

I feel like I can't trust the autocrew in the sonar station because trying to play any scenario as a commander gets me detected and killed before I have any idea of what's going on and what's around me.

Hello, captain comrade!

Welcome to Dangerous Water. DW is one of the best subsim game out there.

Anyway....detecting a sub is always different. It depends where you are (like Atlantic Oceon or Yellow Sea), and type of the sub that you are trying to track down. Usually nuclear powered submarines makes more noise. And when enemy sub is under thermal layer, it gets much more hard to track the sub down. Use towed sonar and compare with other two sonar station. Than use your TMA station to increase your calculation accuracy and engage. I usually fire snapshot, but that is entirly up to you. I don't use any autocrews, because I like to have some challenge. If you are new and practicing, play this game with 'Show Truth' option on and practice.

And check out RA mod for DW. It improves the game much better.

Good Luck! And feel free to ask questions.

yo, whats up nangleator and ROK-lonewolf, autocrew doesnt give you any tracks in DEMON, you have to do it ya self bro, and you must use the right sonar array, for eg towed not hull array

the thing i hate most about the DW sonar is that you can't determine contacts DEPTH, if ya can it will be so much easier to make a firing solution, most of the time, i have most of the autocrew on, i just can't react fast enough for them to be off, show truth has its problems too

i have no idea on how to use the TMA, manual is too confusing so is tutuorial

and it will be good to be able to determine ALTITUDE too

I don't get what are you trying to say. So far DW is the most realistic mordern submarine warfare simulation game. You do need to use all sonar stations to briefly the correct information. (Towed array sonar have mirror reflection) Kindly, DW dev team did include tutorial videos and manuals with it. It can be confusing (I still don't know how surface unit works correctly),but it is well explained. Just try to pay attention. And as I said earlier, you don't have to use TMA, TMA makes your calculation alot more accurate. I use it when I have time, but when I am being detected or chased, I just use Snapshot.
