Dangerous Waters

Dangerous Waters

For the love of the Gods I can't solve the mouse artifact issue and is driving me crazy (AMD)
So finally I made the game work on windows 11, wrapper and all but I had the common "mouse stuck in the middle" issue so I turned the software mouse on in the ini file. If anything now it's worse since the mouse leaves a trail of artifacts which make my screen look like one of those vaporware windows 95 inspired music videos

Does anyone have any solution for it? I have tried fiddling with the AMD setups but after two hours I give up

1. You are using the custom ddraw.dll 'fix'?
2. You running the game in Windows 'Compatibility Mode'? (Win95, or XP ...)
3. You have checked the "Change high DPI settings" boxes: 'Program DPI' and 'High DPI scaling behavior'?

... in the end, this is a (common) DirectX API rendering issue of old games rendering 2D mouse cursors in new, changed Windows Operating Systems (since Vista upwards). The mouse movement icon artifacts are a result of bad/'wrong' rendering due to the driver/wrapper.

Why do you write that switching from 3D hardware acceleration to software mode made it 'worse'? Does the cursor work in 3D? Why then change?

This game works on my (and others) Windows 11 PCs. So, it is a solvable problem. I tried the game with AMD Radeons, Nvidia and even Intel iGPU ... all working. Forcing the monitor to Fullscreen scaling often does the trick, on it's own.

Good luck.

I think I've tried everything you mentioned. Changing DPI, all compatibility modes (windos 95 wouldn't even launch), When I mean software mouse makes things "worse" I was perhaps exagerating, Hardware mouse makes the mouse to be stuck/fixen in the center of the screen and I can only choose things "blindly", no mouse moving in the screen but if you manage to put this invisible mouse over some option it will highlight it and allow me to press. As you can imagine you cannot play in this way, it's literally an invisible mouse, then if you switch the mouse to software you have the glitch artifacts

The game works fine with the wrapper on all my other NVIDIA devices and even on the steam deck, it just does this behaviour in my new AMD laptop

I just updated my wrapper (i.e. dvorak one) to fix the non-moving hardware cursor on my W10. So you might try it to see, if that helps for you.

are you on AMD?

I have a Nvidia card however that workaround is generic. Basicaly it just calls a function which the game was supposed to call to make the cursor work without need to enable the software cursor.
