Dangerous Waters

Dangerous Waters

Does this game actually still work?
First, i run win7 64bit, so that is a bonus for this game i guess.

I "play" if you can call it like that, the game when it came out mid 2000th´s, i was in my early 20ies, i was never very good in the game and never knew 100% what i was doing but i could get around in most missions okish.

Now i see they still sell that game for, LOL, 14€. And i read here that for most people it does not work properly out of the box and has bugs that will never be fixed as sonlayst just ditched that game even with people still buying it for quiet a bit of money for a 2006 game.

So do you think the game is still worth it now in 2020? It would seem i can play the game without useing the win10 fix, as i managed to avoid win10 so far, but will there be any other problems waiting for me i dont know about yet?
I dont want to pay 14€ for a 2006 game and discover some goofy and broken stuff like 140 minutes down the road and i can no longer refund.

Anyone can give me some info?

The "classic naval combat pack" with 688, fleet and sub command cost only 3.99 right now in sale and it does more or less the same, but cost a fraction of this game. So i think i just pick up that pack for 3.99 maybe or does that have any other drawbacks?

What do you think?

Yes, the game is worth it. Price might look steep for an old game but when you take into account the number of hours you'll spend with it... it is nothing.

Dangerous Waters is still the best "modern" sub simulation game out there on the market.

This game (DW) works for me (64-bit win10). The only file I added was d3d8.dll under the installation directory. 688i worked directly after download. Some people grief about Fleet and Sub Command not working, but there are numerous complaints about this game as well, so I'm not too sure how valid they all are.
I'm actually not too fond of DW compared to 688i, but this game gives you many more platforms to run with.

On an unrelated tangent, how do players post their screenshots? For me, the Steam Overlay doesn't work for older games. I can capture screens by other means, but the only way to post them seems to require uploading them as 'artworks'.

After a lot of searching i did find my Strategy First retail release CD version, patch it to 1.04 and it runs flawless on my win7 system if i launch from "LaunchDW", if i use the exe there are problems, no intro, no sound, missions do not load with error that UI can not be loaded or something.
When i run it throgh the launcher it works flawless. GPU scaling in nvidia panel and i have fine 4:3 unstretched picture.

So now i at least know it works perfectly fine on my system, i put the game on wishlist and see if there is a sale maybe at some point. I would like to own the game on steam to have it in my library.
I try to play the kilo demo, lol i cant remember anything anymore, i am useless, have to watch a ton of tutorials to get back into it i guess.

Totally understandable; the manual just goes on and on and on. Had I never played 688i, it would have been even more to absorb.
Steam versions are usually fully patched (DW on 0.1.0.4 and 688i on 1.0.8.0) and easier to run than older release versions on other media. But considering the age of these games, I probably wouldn't have purchased them either had they not been on sale.

688(i), Sub Command (with mods), Dangerous Waters (with mods) as well as Fleet Command (with mods) are titles which you won't see or experience anywhere else. These are totally worth it! All titles do work (Win7, Win8, Win10), lots of info is available in the internet.

Also managed to get games like Jane's IAF/USAF/F-15, MiG Alley running without any problems.

Despite this -> FPSChazly on youtube... there you get to see some of the action :)

I have the same configuration (64-bit win 10) and paste the d3d8.ddl on this route (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Dangerous Waters) but it still doesn´t work. Any ideas?
Thanks for the help

Did you launch from Steam? Did the initial splash menu (Play, Manual, Tutorials, Readme, Gamespy, Website, Exit) pop up?

I used version 2 of the DLL file from <http://www.jiri-dvorak.cz/dangw/index.html>. My discrete video card (reason unrelated to this) was missing, so the game was running just on the motherboard's integrated chipset. Can't think of anything else I did that might have been special. Maybe you can try to see if anything in these threads might help, or tinker with different settings?

Yes! I launched it from Steam, appears the splash menu but when I clicked Play a message appears saying "Failed to initialize the graphics display", and then another one, "Context Create Error" and a number.

Btw, I am using the 2nd version too of the DLL.

I'm not sure what might help then, other than trying the different settings in the properties for the exe file or editing the ini file.

Works great and 1280 x 1024. Also with the RA-Mod.

I use Linux with Proton and it works wonders. I also have Red Alert mod, RA mod with Q4wine. I am very happy with my set up. I had to work at it to finally get it to work but is it so worth it for me. I ain't too bright so anyone should be able to get this to function with a little elbow grease.

The other big mod is actually more recommended than Red Alert.
