Why do MMORPGs all have terrible stories?

Don't they get sick of the Chosen One narrative in every mmorpg?
Chosen one story is pretty cliche, and sometimes cringy as it is in single players. But it kinda hurts MMO even more. It is always the same, you were the hero the world needed, and then you walk into a town choke full of Chosen Ones.

Any professional game dev story writer, please shed some enlightenment on this?

Only the first act in this game has bigger and better story than games like Skyrim.

FF14 doesn't have a bad story though so it's not all MMO.

WoW also WAS good up to Wrath thanks to Warcraft 3 building it up. After that it went downhill as the WoW writers clearly weren't all the ones that wrote the Warcraft 3 story. Then wen Metzen left they really took a nose dive.

Garrosh was right. So was Varian and Jaina. Too bad bad writing ruined them all.

Many. One could be an average bypasser who was being made used of by a gang and got embroiled in larger events. Does not even have to be the main hero, just a hand of the actual hero. Makes all the mundane fetch quests sound more reasonable and walking among a hundred other similar players more believable. I am not a professional story writer, those who are can do better.

also the chosen one story is just a mcguffin to justify the fact that >you< can do all thoses thing when NOBODY ELSE can. and why YOU are the one being called on when, in a more realistic PoV: anybody could too.


So yes, the chosen one trope is just to justify the very thing as to why you play the game: you are a special snowflake more powerfull than anybody else

Not all MMO got bad story: Elder Scrolls online have great lore and story for almost all it's content. Even the good old Guild Wars 2 got a great lore and solid storyline.

I agree. I did play it until Shadowbringer, did not finish it. It was kinda cringy to me although sure better in mmo standards.

I don't recall being the "chosen one" in Everquest or WoW Classic, not that I thought they had good stories either. Stories in most computer games are pretty sucktastic, in the main.

You would be in the minority. It's critically acclaimed for its story every expansion release for a reason.

The only "bad" per say story is the slow start in ARR. It's extremely important as every Expansion is tied heavily to what ARR sets up. The game STILL mentions and brings back important plot points from ARR with Endwalker pulling from every expansion and bringing back nearly every important character throughout the saga.

I've played many games in my lifetime and FF14's story is above and beyond nearly all of them after you reach near the end of ARR and going forward. Even Stormblood is amazing (especially post MSQ). Its only real issue is that Ala Mhigo didn't get as much investment in it like Doma did.

I can agree with GW2 part. The heroes were the Destiny Edge and you were the one to bring them together. I like the writing.

No need to be condescending if you are interested in discussing. Indeed, weeb stuff is not for me.
I am no fool, I can see the production level and budget put into story for FFXIV. Most of the scenes have hand animated characters and camera, and cost alot unlike the generic cutscenes we get in most other mmo.
If I were to write the ffxiv into a one paragraph pitch, it will not stand out. It was the execution that made it good, not the writing.
