Water And Ice Are The Same?

I'm playing as Sorc, and I see there are a lot of ice attacks, but the type of elemental damage is water, this means, even if the effect is ice, the elemental is water... I have that chest that we choose which pet to get, and there there's an Ice pet that enhance the damage in 1 percent, or something like that. This ice pet does increase the water damage?

Yes ice and water are the same. For the level build you are playing basically Ice/Lightning mage. Later even more Ice mage. On level 50 most people play 2/3 ice mage.
