1. Honing has a 100% success rate up through level 6. After that, it drops somewhat linearly for each level, so save your star's breath and other percentage enhancing items for the higher levels.
2. You can run Chaos Dungeons without Aura of Resonance, but subsequent runs after the first two will grant much reduced destruction, guardian, and leapstones. The disorder crystals can be collected to trade to the nearby NPC for jewellery (with random affixes), engraving recipes, and extra honing materials. The honing mats you get this way are character bound, but the shards and crystals are roster-bound. Thus, store the shards and crystals you get in your roster inventory, and trade for them as need-be with the characters you need them on.
3. Honing goes up to level 20, but there's absolutely no need to hone T1 or T2 gear that high! In fact, you should hone your T1 gear up to a gear score of 460 (or whatever you need for the next story quest), do that, then run more Chaos Dungeons to get honing mats for the next threshold (600 IIRC), and so forth.
4. If you find equipment (but not Jewellery) in the dungeon with a higher quality level than what you currently have on, use the gear transfer option at the honing NPC to transfer the honing levels from your current equipment to the better one. It's not 100% necessary, but it can help. You don't need to re-hone a 90-quality weapon just because your current one is at 20-quality and has 6 levels on it.
5. At higher gear levels, honing will cost you gold.
