why bound? why not roster?

I get making mats/mat-bags untradable but why bound to character.. for a game that emphasizes having alts it seems pointless to have t1/2 mats bound to character rather than roster...
you end with your t3 char(s) having hundreds if not thousands of stones/shards that are then useless, it'd be nice if they were just changed to 'roster-bound untradable' or at least give us a way to convert them up t1->t2->t3.

Are You sure that it is a staple of MMO?
Also, how binding those materials to a roster would be agains players creating alts? If anything it would incentivise that behaviour.

Game is pushing you to bust out your credit card as much as they can without being too "obvious".
