The first 10 minutes of early access, every name was already taken.

It's because you can't use spaces in your name, or any more than 1 capital letter.

Amazon should have worked on this, instead of trying to censor costume legs, and colour NPC skins for political correctness reasons.

It's pure ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ in the first place. Imagine if real people had to have unique names to everyone else. I couldn't be named Ethan because someone alive today already has that name. What is it even supposed to mean "name has been taken". Okay well tell that Nobody to stop going around stealing names and photos. Makes no sense. I tried to make my male gunner look like Nero and I can't name him Nero! Why?! Because someone else is already named Nero? So what?! I don't care about that total stranger. He's not me and we have different accounts. What possible confusion could come of me and some randos having the same character name? It doesn't make any sense and it should not work this way.

they made names unique for server cross play, but restricted spaces/special characters/capitals/numbers and wonder why on a EURO server busting with population XxxxxDrizztxxxxx appears

It wouldn't be too bad, but they region locked names, not server locked. Then they made it limited to few characters, no spaces, no special characters and it's like....

This makes it pretty bad, yeah.

Allowing 1 space in the name could have made all the difference.

its worse than you think, if you delete a character after they've leveled once (lvl 11), you can't reuse the name for 60 days.

It'd be even worse than that. What if it just so happened that once those 60 days are up you find that apparently someone snagged up that name from you right before you could reclaim in on a new character? If you have a more common name in mind, especially one of another video game character, goodness knows you could end up losing the name altogether after that period.

You can get around special characters. I went to a special characters site, and have used the one for i. Not by inputting the command either. I just copied and pasted the letter into the name.

Was able to get Deedlit and Xiuying (Shenmue reference) because of it. :P

Pretty sure this doesn't work for all special characters, but it did for the letter i.

I have six characters. Not all of them have my first choice, but some of them do. And all of them have a suitable choice for the pattern I use in my naming. Which I am sure many of you will be able to guess said pattern. :)

From what i understand.
All names are cross server...
You'd have to be extremely lucky to even get your first picked name.
