Gunlancer can be fun, especially juggling mobs to death, but the damage is weak (compared to pure DPS classes) and some of the abilities are awkward to use because you will fight in melee range but some of them will land behind the enemies if your rotation gets messed up.
Gunlancer has some neat tricks like cancelling boss attacks with taunt, but I notice that it just doesn't work sometimes. Also his bubble is great, but since you can't animation cancel most abilities in this game you will sometimes not get the bubble off if you're in the middle of an attack animation. It makes it really awkward to use him properly. I don't even see why anyone would take gunlancer into a raid over a real support or a real DPS. I regret leveling gunlancer instead of paladin or bard.
you will learn how to do mechanics better on Paladin too since you don't have a magic bubble that you can pop over and over again
Pick the class that makes you go woo
So Gunlancer is where you want to go for more solo content. They are also very easy to play. And if you ever want to join a group for stuff, they are also almost always welcomed into groups. Very tanky, and can deal just as much dmg as the next dps class, easy to play. (I am a Paladin main btw)
Gunlancer is fun till lvl 50 after that is just a slug. Also while everyone dash or roll to escape from danger gunlancer only has a little backwards jump.
He shines in defense support for the group or staggering bosses if you can catch them.
Terrible Gunlancer spotted. The class is hard to play because you're not a tank and you're not a full DPS. Playing a Gunlancer is knowing when to tank, and when to DPS, and most important of all, when to interrupt. Most of the game right now is a progression grind, and when you're progressing item level is god making Gunlancer less important.
I personally think Paladin is more fun to play out the two for the action. Gunlancer feels slower with laboured attacks. Some people love that, I'm not a massive fan of it.
If I want to choose which is much more efficient end game. I'd say Gunlancers.
Their blue specs (high staggers / armor breaks), taunt that cancels (non-super armor attacks or wipe mechanics) and well-timed Nelia's Blessing it is an absolute must for end game or even Normal farming.
You can have both in your roster.
I am having fun with the Mayhem Berserker. Little harder to play, but very satisfying. :)
Gunlancer is an SS tier dps later in the endgame, this is not a support, you can literraly stand in aoe, you'll take 0 damage and still dps. It's a must have for endgame raid.
Or you can just level up a Gunlancer and boost the paladin later on.
It's impossible to be bad at gunlancer. You don't have to even do mechanics most of the time. Doesn't change the fact that a lack of animation cancelling and awkward attack ranges makes the class super clunky.
nobody should make a decision based on end-game raids. people who care about tier lists on raid content will be spending enough money that they can have all the classes at max level that they want.
