I switched my starting ship for a ridge dragon, and upgraded it a bit. My fleet strength was 12, but even fleets in the 20s were not really a problem, and I made it up to the black coffin before I decided I would come back with a bigger ship, or at least more than one ship (maybe I could have done that in my ridge dragon, but the first attempt was not that close.)
Bird fleets are bad though, I left one of the side quests which I think is only rated at 14 and seems straight impossible. I even outfitted my ship with lots of interception weapons, but nothing can cover the back, and trying to make sure no birds sit there means I am not fighting the battle.
I am fitting out a cruiser now, and still have the ridge dragon. I noticed I just kind of melt the birds now that I have rear turrets, but for some ships they seem to be a fairly hard counter, especially if you face three opponents with birds.
