is there a counter to the damn birds?
Seriously, i was having a lot of fun with this game until the aether hawks showed up. there doesn't seem to be any counter for them. i just get swarmed and they peck at my ship until i get lucky and destroy their mother ship first or they sink my vessel. how do i counter them? and when i do what's to stop another wave from showing up and continuing where the last ones left off.

seriously, i was having fun exchanging cannon fire with enemies until they had death bird swarms. is there a way to fight them off or am I just going to have to wait for some updates?

Put weapons marked as "interception' on your stern, such as 4 Kinetic Lances. Since those are energy weapons they drain very little ammo and the 4 will deal 2,400 together per shot. You can also put a 'Repeater' on your ship, which is a long range interception weapon that doubles as being able to harry small ships.

As they said, interception weapons. Rotary guns (or the quad rotary turret), air-burst guns, lances. You'll need at least a few per side to prevent fliers from getting in close enough to pummel you.

I use kinetic beam projectors. Usually one fore and one aft for better broadside coverage. They will take down incoming missiles too if they get lucky.

This is my first game (also on the harder "way it is meant to be played" difficulty), and I noticed just how much more dangerous a fleet with birds is as well.

I switched my starting ship for a ridge dragon, and upgraded it a bit. My fleet strength was 12, but even fleets in the 20s were not really a problem, and I made it up to the black coffin before I decided I would come back with a bigger ship, or at least more than one ship (maybe I could have done that in my ridge dragon, but the first attempt was not that close.)

Bird fleets are bad though, I left one of the side quests which I think is only rated at 14 and seems straight impossible. I even outfitted my ship with lots of interception weapons, but nothing can cover the back, and trying to make sure no birds sit there means I am not fighting the battle.

I am fitting out a cruiser now, and still have the ridge dragon. I noticed I just kind of melt the birds now that I have rear turrets, but for some ships they seem to be a fairly hard counter, especially if you face three opponents with birds.
those birds only annoying when ur ship is lower than heavy frigate , with bigger ship you got lots of rapid shield gen those bird cant damage ur rear anymore
