Cruise Drive Failure

I don't know what in the hell I am doing wrong but this is infuriating.
For some reason, after buying a new ship which is now sitting as an escort I find that I cannot engage cruise drive unless I use autopilot.
I will max out speed, refuse to touch the turn buttons, and it wont start the countdown ever.
I have fuel.
I checked that the Cruise toggle is on
I've tried holing "W" and not holding it.
It just refuses to activate.
Which is a massive problem if I am trying to avoid encounters.
I need cruise to get around them. But now it will only work with autopilot with an escort.

literally as soon as I posted this it magically works again for no reason.
I was struggling with this for over 30 minutes, reloading saves, still having the issue, trying to turn off manual and autopilot, turning on and off cruise toggle, and nothing was working. Still no cruise out of autopilot even if I waited minutes for it to start count down.

I post this god forsaken discussion and in the same loaded game that I was still having problems with this it suddenly started working again. What in the hell.

Honestly, I've given up on using anything but autopilot outside of combat.
