The "Real" How-To Fix Luxor Guide!
This game was a huge part of my childhood growing up. I absolutely played the crap out of it, and was so excited when I saw it on Steam. So, I went and bought the Luxor Collection with the disappointment that this game was not working. So, I went and looked into not only how to fix it, but also why it was not working.

When Steam acquired this game, they received a copy with what appears to be a ".SWF" file as like a splash screen. As some of you know, Flash reached it's End-Of-Life on December 30, 2020. This is causing anyone who is currently purchasing the game to run into some errors, and "Not being able to run as Administrator" because the executable is launching a Flash Player file and is considered "Unsafe".

The solution? This handy-dandy little guide that will get your game up and running again. I dug around the basement and found the Luxor 4-in-1 game disk that I had grown up on. I ran some tests to figure out what files we needed to run the game, and realized that Steam has all of those already.

Step 1: Open Steam, and find your Luxor Game

Step 2: Right click on the Luxor Icon, and under "Manage" click the "Browse Local Files" button

Step 3: Find the files named "Flash"(.ocx), "game"(.dmg), "Splash"(.swf), and "Luxor"(.exe)
Note: You may see the part in parenthesis, you might not. It's alright either way.

Step 4: You can delete these files if you so wish, or move them to another folder, or if you do see those parenthesis, change it to .xxx2
Note: The .xxx portion is whatever portion you see in the parenthesis, if you modify the .swf file, change it to .swf2 for example.

Step 5: Go to "https://www.dropbox.com/s/p8601f12zxv5223/Luxor.zip?dl=0" (Copy and paste into Web Browser and remove quotations, because steam is currently blocking links) and download the (.zip) folder after closing the "Sign In With Dropbox" button, because who wants to do that?
Note: This contains the executable that I used during my childhood, and has not been modified in any way by me.

Step 6: Go to where your file was downloaded, right click the file, and click "Extract All...", and click the Extract button.
Note: In Windows 11, this option may be under the "More Options" button.

Step 7: You're almost done! Go into the extracted folder called "Luxor" and copy the "Luxor"(.exe) file.

Step 8: Paste it into the folder where you deleted/changed/modified the "Flash"(.ocx), "game"(.dmg), "Splash"(.swf), and "Luxor"(.exe) files.

Step 9: Close all of the folders, Open Steam, and click the "Play" button!

Step 10: (And I really mean this one!) Enjoy!

Edit: Changed Luxor over to Dropbox due to "Virus Found" on the other, even though it was signed by MumboJumbo and hasn't been modified since then?

Secondary Edit: This fix was supposed to be primarily for the issue where you could not run the game on the modern system due to Steam Files being bugged. Now that you all have gotten that fixed, the other bugs are starting to pop up that are much more out of my control to fix. I recommend standard troubleshooting things such as running in a different compatibility mode, tweaking your config files, verifying your game files, and even reinstalling as needed. Anything else beyond that is not within my realm of being able to fix. I apologize for calling this the definitive guide, even though it can't solve all of your issues that arise. The only other thing I could do is provide you with the entire game CD from my childhood, but we're borderline talking about pirating by that point, and I don't feel comfortable with that. Feel free to try to search for your other issues online as well, you could potentially need silly things like DirectX and other things that I didn't think to mention as well. Sorry again for the confusion and hope you all can find fixes.

I have gone in and copied the ZIP file with the executable over to Dropbox since it was marked as a "Virus" incorrectly by MediaFile. Hope you enjoy!

thanks, but I have a problem in the game. When I click "click here to play", my game crashes with a request to install windows xp. I put the game in compatibility mode and I have no sound in the game, I move the sound slider, but it does not drag (when I try to move the slider, it is automatically set to silent).

Hmmm... It was working for me without compatibility mode. I'm guessing that you probably have the Mute option unchecked in the settings menu, and you have a working headset/speaker set that can be confirmed when launching another game already... What OS are you using, and what version is it? Just trying to help narrow down some possibilities as to why you are having compatibility issues.

I really don't know if this could be a factor, but do you think your anti-virus could have removed a few additional files from the installation? Depending on your provider, you might want to try checking their "quarantined" section if applicable.

Audio issues could indicate something possibly happened to either your snd3d_fmod.dll or snd3d.dll files. You can check to see if those are in your folder. Worse comes to worse, you can right click on your Luxor game in steam, and click on "Properties" and verify integrity of game files. Instead of renaming the files, I would consider following the guide and deleting those four files instead of renaming them. If you want me to as well, I can get a list of all the files and folders in that main folder that you can cross-reference to see if anything's missing if it helps. Just let me know if any of these helps at all!

Worked for me! Only drawback is that full screen is disabled. Also, do you know if any other versions of Luxor don't work on Steam? I am reading that they don't.

I'm not so sure about the Fullscreen issue, I would try checking your in-game settings and seeing if the checkbox is enabled for fullscreen. If that's already done, I'm not sure what would be causing that to happen.

So far as other version of Luxor that don't work with the default Steam Files, I think the original Luxor, Luxor 2, and Luxor: Amun Rising games don't work. They have remastered versions available for seperate purchase, but I'm more used to these three original games. I have posted patches for those as well, in case you were wondering.

As of recently at the last days of August 2022, it works flawlessly! Only issue is that the FPS does quick stutters when moving the Scarab a lot left and right, but otherwise everything works! In fact, the .exe file the OP shared works for the Demo too (with the original file, pressing start just doesn't work and instantly re-opens the Demo splash screen), meaning that not only the game itself works, but it also completely bypasses the 1-hour limit, essentially being able to play the full game for free!

I've made every step, but the game still doesn't start. If i click on the play button, the game stops automatic. Did I something wrong maybe? I don't think that I have made something wrong. I did every thing on these steps.

You could try to validate your steam files, or do an uninstall and reinstall and walk through the guide again. This guide mainly fixes trying to run the game and receiving an error in Windows saying that you can't launch it due to the game being "unsafe." It should help with some additional fixes as well, but I haven't done extensive testing with any other issues. I can verify that my fix works with Windows 11 with latest updates as well, and should be backwards compatible even through Windows XP. I can try to help further, but will need some additional information like an explanation for your issue and your operating system version and so on.

Hi, I was so happy to find a tutorial to be able to play this game again but it doesn't work :(
I make every steps but the game crash 3 seconds after the launch. I try to uninstall/reinstall but that doesn't work. I'm on windows 11, if you can help me :(

Having this same issue with the volume slider. Everything else works fine, including DJKiltScor's fixes for 2 and Amun Rising. Did you fix this?

Edit: can confirm I have snd3d_fmod.dll and snd3d.dll in my files too

Edit 2: Fixed! I had the .exe running compatibility mode, disabling it worked! Thank you again :)
