How to collect grass whistlers?

The guidebook says to hide, then use the trowel, but i don't understand how I'm supposed to do that. Has anyone figured it out yet?

When you approach them they get scared and hide underground. Now you need to locate them and dig them up, you do that through 1) sound 2) a little music note nexte to our little witch that gets... more energetic let's say.

walk around in short steps, when the note is in a bold circle, DIG.

if you press the z key to dig while searching, there will be sound lines that show up indicating how 'hot or cold' you are in relation to the grass whistlers. you can also walk around until you automatically see a circular yellow flash around the music note displayed next to your character. to dig it up you need to hold it until the red section like you're digging for mud.
