Example Iron sorter
Iron -> port A
Rock -> port B
Dirt -> port C
Slag -> port D
Sand -> port D
Quartz -> port D
Usually a truck would not carry two metal ores (as the mines are rarely next to each other i think in vanilla maps), but basically you have to set up your sorter to sort all stuff (dirt and rocks too) from 1 or couple of mining areas, you can't sort them all with one, there is not enough slots (8) for accepted resources.
And you want all of your sorters to sort Dirt, Rock, Slag, Sand, Limestone and what ever the excavators might dig up at that plot, because for a truck to drive to a sorter, the sorter needs to sort all the things the truck carries.
First you want to separate your desired resource. (Port A)
Next you might want to separate rock and dirt, as they are more abundant. (Ports B and C)
Everything else (Sand, Limestone, Slag, Waste, Quartz) goes to port D and to belt sorters, to get idk, dumped, burnt?
And if you really don't wish to use a T-junction for making one output into two lines, you can have a separate ore sorter for both lines. it will be a spaghetti mess, but is doable. (but you cant have one ore from two outputs, and I wouldn't suggest it either looking at the capacities.)
Nice main bus build btw, first I think I have ever seen, but you should have left more space on both sides of the bus, it will get tight soon.
I thought sand limestone and quartz were useful. Would it be better to just dump those to the side for a while and dig it back up later?
Appreciate the compliment btw. I am almost ready to redo the whole thing I just need to setup the storage for it and setup a dual line instead of a single. I am almost ready to be done with bricks which will help considerably.
If Ore Sorting is enabled, then Trucks with mixed loads can only dump in an Ore Separator Plant or at a dumping site. Trucks with a load of a single resource can also dump in Storage containers and buildings.
Ore Sorter Plant's setup depends entirely on your mining plot(s), almost always the plot has a lot of rocks, which would benefit from a separate output port, same with dirt, for better outputting speed. Putting rock and dirt under same port essentially halves their output, no matter the following belt sorters.
I have a plot that has both coal and limestone in a rock/dirt environment; for this I would set up:
A) Coal
B) Limestone
C) Rocks (or initially dirt, depends on dirt depth, mountains)
D) Dirt, Sand, Slag, Quartz and Waste.
Limestone is absolutely necessary for recipes, but quartz (after being nerfed) is only for additional sand. (I haven't dug up my Quartz plot at all, since it is only used for sand, and I have an abundance of that, I could replace it with a metal, but for that I'd prefer a separate port)
I wouldn't dump anything (except early waste), but slag and rock in the oceans, some dirt in shallower shores to be dug up again later. (only real use imo for dirt is to cover any newly gained land with 1m thick layer for farms and trees to be grown on) Dumping and re-digging just uses up your workforce and maintenance, it's better not to dig them up in the first place, if you cant use or store them.
For the bus, I place belts spaced by 1 or 2 spaces at the second level. Then pull the belts down to the ground and over to the rows of factory buildings. (Similar to how Nilaus does it in his videos.)
And I didn't realize that the Quartz was nerfed so much. Looks like I will be deleting Quartz with the new map editor on my maps.
By the way, I no longer use the Ore Sorter buildings. I think they add too much difficulty for little results. If they were upgradeable with larger internal storage I might reconsider.
Edit: Now using the Ore Sorters a lot. Took awhile to get used to them, but now I think they work great. I guess I just don't like change.
My usual setup is that one sorter handles one main product, and 1-3 "junk" products (rock, dirt, sand). Each product gets storage, and junk products are combined together on 1-2 exit belts, then sorted later. I say "junk", but that's maybe a bad term; most of the stuff you belt should be going into your factory, not ending up being dumped.
