Do I have to manually remove trees before placing a building?

idk if I'm just dumb but it seems trees just "block" buildings, so far my only gripe with this game :P

Yes. Trees are resource like everything else. So they block buildings. It keeps you partially from destroying your whole available wood supply without means to replace it. (Partially because if you really want to, you can do just about anything)
