I got the opposite problem, I need more nitrogen for fertilizer and I'm not using all the oxygen. So in your case : Nitrogen output into balancer; balancer into tank and into smokestack

Click on balancer then on the priority box(es) to set which in- or output(s) will have priority.
Now that I#m looking at it again, it might actually a be a good idea to set this up for both outputs to futureproof it.
naah I'm with Nellvan here, I don't see the point in having 20 storages of Nitrogen in order to use it later, you can mass produce it easily with the Air Separator building
some ven more complex game let the player in the total unknow i guess it part of the chalenge but for some like me whoo are poor at math this impossible to play without begging help in forum and if ever i had no internet i will be blocked
I slap one down wherever I need them. They're easily built to be completely autonomous, so my trucks can handle more important tasks.
The only case where I don't just slap one down locally is if I can run a pipeline to another source of nitrogen close by that is sufficient for the task.
if I need the extra nitrogen later on for something else I can always remove the stack, put in a storage tank and do what I need after
