Managing Tree farms

How do you manage you tree farms? Do you assign the vehicles to the towers or just let them roam free?
Free roaming seemed to work for a long time and then suddenly they couldnt find any tree to cut with huge grown forests all around them.

They will only plant and cut trees at the farm they are assigned to.

Tree harvesters have to be assigned to the Forestry control tower to cut down trees in the areas, don't forget the harvesters will still need their own trucks.
Free roaming only works until there are no trees assigned to be harvested.

They don't, really. They will automatically harvest from the growing areas of any tower if they are not assigned. At some point they stopped, and I was hoping someone knew why.

I have 2, both with seed farms right beside, assign a couple cutters with 3-4 trucks each and 1 planter on each, steady wood little effort.
